Are You a Hearer or a Doer?

Oct 11, 2026  •  Pastor Steven Pettis Jr

Is it possible to hear God's Word, understand what it says, and still fail to respond to what God requires? James reminds us that hearing the Word is not the same as obeying it. We can attend worship, listen to sermons, study Scripture, and even agree with biblical truth yet walk away unchanged.

In “Are You a Hearer or a Doer?”, Pastor Steve concludes our Receive sermon series by challenging us to examine what we are doing with what we have heard. Through James 1:22–25, we discover the danger of deceiving ourselves through hearing without obedience, the importance of allowing God's Word to reveal what needs to change, and the blessing of becoming faithful doers of the Word.

God has not given us His Word merely to increase our knowledge, but to transform how we live. We don't obey to earn salvation; because Christ has given us new life, we are called to walk in obedience to Him. The question isn't simply, “How much of God's Word have I heard?” but “What am I doing with what I've heard?”

Don't just hear the Word. Receive the Word. Be a doer of the Word!
