When the Words Are Right, but the Heart Is Wrong

Feb 15, 2026    Pastor Steven Pettis Jr

In our ongoing series Walking by the Spirit in Our Time, Treasure, and Talent, we turn our focus to the gift of speech and the responsibility that comes with it. Ephesians 4:29 reminds us that our words are never neutral. They either build up or tear down. They either produce grace or spread harm.

In this message, we explore what it truly means to speak in a Spirit-led way. Through the example of Jesus’ conversation with the woman at the well (John 4) and Peter’s exhortation in 1 Peter 4:7–11, we learn that edifying speech is more than saying the right thing; it is saying the right thing in the right tone, at the right time, with the right heart.

Truth without love can wound. Correction without tenderness can divide. But when speech is governed by the Holy Spirit, shaped by grace, and rooted in submission to Christ, it strengthens the Body and glorifies God.

Join us as we confront the danger of being “tone-deaf” Christians and learn how to steward our words in a way that reflects the heart of Christ and builds up His Church.
