Devotional: Delighting in the Word of God

Scripture Focus

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.”
—Psalm 1:2 (NASB 1995)

Sermon Reflection

Psalm 1 presents us with two paths. One path follows the counsel of the world, settles into sinful patterns, and ultimately leads away from God. The other path is the way of the blessed person, a person whose life is shaped by a completely different affection.

David teaches us that the blessed life is not primarily about behavior; it is about delight.

The blessed man does not reject sin because he possesses extraordinary discipline. He rejects lesser things because he has found something better. He has found a greater satisfaction in God Himself.

This is why David says his delight is “in the law of the LORD.” The focus is not merely on a book or information. It is about the God who speaks through His Word. The Scriptures become precious because they reveal the One our souls were created to know and enjoy.

Whatever captures our hearts eventually occupies our minds. We naturally think about what we love.

We revisit it.
We talk about it.
We make time for it.
We carry it with us throughout the day.

David says the blessed person does this with God’s Word. He meditates on it day and night. He continually brings God’s truth back before his mind until it shapes how he thinks, responds, and lives. This means the direction of your life is determined by the delight of your heart. Your affections shape your thoughts. Your thoughts shape your actions. And your actions reveal what you truly worship.

The good news of the gospel is that Jesus Christ is the perfectly blessed Man of Psalm 1. He perfectly delighted in His Father and perfectly walked in righteousness. Through His death and resurrection, He gives us new hearts with new desires and teaches us to delight in God and His Word.

The blessed life is not found in trying harder.

The blessed life is found in finding a greater delight.

How I Should Respond

I need to ask myself some honest questions this week:

What occupies my mind when I have nothing else to think about?
What do I continually return to for comfort and satisfaction?
What am I feeding my soul?
Does my life reveal a delight in God or a delight in lesser things?

The Lord is not simply calling me to read my Bible more. He is inviting me into fellowship with Him. I need to slow down and remember that Scripture is not merely information to study, but it is an opportunity to hear the voice of my Father, to behold His glory, and to enjoy His presence.

As my heart grows in affection for God, my mind will increasingly meditate on His truth, and my life will increasingly follow His ways.

Weekly Prayer

Father,

Forgive me for the times my heart has found greater pleasure in the things of this world than in You. Forgive me for feeding my mind with things that cannot satisfy my soul. Give me a deeper love for Your Word because it reveals You. Create in me a greater affection for Christ and teach me to delight in Your presence. Fill my mind with Your truth. Let Your Word shape my thoughts, govern my decisions, and direct my life. By Your Spirit, make me a person who treasures You above everything else.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Five-Day Application Plan

Day 1 – Examine Your Delight

Read: Psalm 1:1-2

Ask yourself: What currently brings me the most joy and satisfaction? Spend time confessing any lesser loves that have captured your heart.

Prayer: “Lord, help me treasure You above everything else.”

Day 2 – Listen to God’s Voice

Read: Jeremiah 15:16

Before reading your Bible today, pray: “Father, I want to know You, not simply gain information about You.” Write down one truth you learn about God’s character.

Prayer: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”

Day 3 – Practice Meditation

Read: Joshua 1:8

Choose one verse from your reading and repeat it throughout the day.

Think about:

What does this verse teach me about God?
What does it reveal about me?
How should I respond?

Prayer: “Lord, let Your truth stay with me today.”

Day 4 – Guard Your Mind

Read: Philippians 4:8

Evaluate what is filling your mind:

Media
Conversations
Social media
Entertainment
Worries and fears

Ask: Is this helping me delight in God?

Prayer: “Lord, renew my mind with Your truth.”

Day 5 – Follow Your Delight

Read: Colossians 3:1-2

Ask: If someone followed my thoughts and habits this week, where would they conclude my treasure is? Choose one practical way to prioritize time with God this coming week.

Prayer: “Jesus, help my life follow the direction of my delight in You.”

Final Thought

You do not drift toward Christ. You move toward what you delight in. If your heart delights in the world, your feet will eventually follow. But when your heart is captivated by the beauty of Christ, your mind will meditate on Him, and your life will increasingly walk in His ways.

The direction of your life is determined by the delight of your heart. May your greatest delight be found in the Lord.
