Sermon Reflection: Proximity Without Possession

In Galatians 5:4, Paul delivers a sobering warning to those who are religious in activity but distant in relationship. The danger of falling from grace is not that you were once saved and lost it, but that you may have never truly received it to begin with.

Many of us can recall moments in life when we mistook being near something for belonging to it. We were present, but we weren’t planted. Paul challenges that false sense of spiritual security: it’s possible to be around church, to serve, sing, and show up regularly, and yet still be severed from Christ.

Trying to justify yourself through religious performance instead of surrendering to Christ is not just ineffective, it’s spiritually fatal. That’s what Paul means when he says “fallen from grace.” You’ve left the only place where salvation is found.

This sermon reminds us: real salvation isn’t found in your effort, it’s found in Jesus. It’s not just about what you do for Him, but whether or not you’re in Him.

How Should I Respond?

Ask yourself:
Am I clinging to Christ or to my own goodness?
When I sin, do I feel conviction or just inconvenience?
Is my walk with God rooted in grace or built on performance?

This isn’t about doubting salvation; it’s about examining the foundation of it. You are not called to try harder but to trust deeper.

If you realize you’ve been walking in proximity without possession, the answer is not shame, it’s surrender.

Weekly Prayer

Father,
I don’t want to just be near You, I want to be in You. Forgive me for the times I’ve relied on my own efforts instead of resting in Your grace. Search my heart and show me where I’ve exchanged intimacy for activity. I ask You to help me live by the Spirit, not by my own strength. Root me in grace, anchor me in truth, and let my life bear fruit that proves I belong to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Application for the Week: 5-Day Plan

Day 1 – Heart Check (Galatians 5:1-4)
Read Galatians 5:1–4. Ask: Have I traded freedom in Christ for a performance-based faith? Journal your answer.

Day 2 – Examine the Root (John 15:1–6)
Abiding is not optional. Read John 15 and reflect on whether your faith is rooted in Christ or just religion.

Day 3 – Grace or Grind? (Romans 11:6)
Meditate on Romans 11:6. Where have you been trusting in works? Confess and release those areas to God.

Day 4 – Conviction or Convenience? (Titus 3:5)
How do you respond to sin? Read Titus 3:5 and journal about how God’s mercy, not your merit, has saved you.

Day 5 – Fruit Check (Matthew 13:24–30)
Review the parable of the wheat and the tares. Are you producing fruit that reflects real connection to Christ?

Final Thought

Beloved, the greatest tragedy isn’t falling down, it’s walking for years thinking you’re saved, only to discover you were never really in Christ.

Don’t just admire the gospel abide in it.
Don’t just be around the church belong to Christ.
Don’t fall from grace; stay rooted in it.

Grace isn’t just a concept to understand; it’s the ground you must stand on.
