The Purpose of Your Freedom – Serving Through Love

SCRIPTURE FOCUS

Galatians 5:13c “But through love, serve one another.”

In one short sentence, Paul answers a big question for every believer:
What is the purpose of my freedom in Christ?
His answer is simple and profound, freedom leads to love, and love expresses itself through service.

SERMON REFLECTION

Paul draws a clear contrast for the church: Freedom can either fuel the flesh or fuel love. And this is where the danger and the beauty lie. Freedom misused becomes a launchpad for the flesh. The flesh turns freedom into self-indulgence, self-exaltation, and self-dependence. It becomes a command center for doing whatever makes you feel good, look good, or stay in control.

But Paul takes us in a different direction. He says, “But…” a sharp line in the sand. That “but” invites us to shift our eyes from ourselves to Christ. From selfishness to servanthood. From pride to humility.

1. The Warning from Luke 22:24–27

The disciples were arguing about greatness not long before Jesus went to the cross. They were chasing status, image, and reputation. Jesus said, “Not so with you.” Self-centeredness poisons service, turning ministry into a stage instead of a towel.

2. The Model from Christ (Philippians 2:5–7)

Christ emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant. He had every right to demand honor, yet He chose humility, sacrifice, and service. He did not cling to the title. He picked up the towel.

3. The Purpose of Freedom

True freedom in Christ leads you to love deeply, forgive freely, open your life to others, use your spiritual gifts, and serve the body faithfully. Freedom is not self-rule. Freedom is Spirit-led purpose.

HOW I SHOULD RESPOND

This is where the devotional becomes personal. Ask yourself: Am I using my freedom for myself… or for others? Your freedom was not given so that you could coast, complain, or compete. It was given so that you could serve. Where has self-centeredness crept in?

Maybe in how you think about your role.
Maybe in how you respond when you are not seen or appreciated.
Maybe in withholding your gifts because you don’t feel recognized.

If you see yourself as the main character, everyone else becomes an extra. But Christ invites you to a different posture. Ask yourself honestly:
Do I serve out of love or out of obligation?
Do I avoid serving because my pride was hurt?
Am I using my spiritual gifts… or sitting on them?
Is there a ministry or a person God is calling me to serve with humility?

The Spirit wants to reshape your freedom into a willingness to love and serve like Jesus.

WEEKLY PRAYER

Father, thank You for the freedom that Christ purchased for me. Forgive me for the moments when I have used that freedom for myself instead of others. Create in me the mind of Christ, humble, gentle, selfless, and ready to serve. Help me love deeply, stretch willingly, forgive freely, and serve joyfully. Open my eyes to the needs around me, and give me the heart to respond. Make my freedom a testimony of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

5-DAY APPLICATION PLAN

DAY 1 — Examine Your Freedom

Read Galatians 5:13.
Ask: Where am I misusing my freedom?
Identify one area where the flesh has taken advantage of it.

DAY 2 — Embrace Christ’s Model of Humility

Read Philippians 2:5–7.
List three ways Jesus humbled Himself.
Choose one way you can imitate that humility today.

DAY 3 — Release Self-Centered Motives

Read Luke 22:24–27.
Write down where pride or recognition has hindered your service.
Pray that God will help you pick up the towel again.

DAY 4 — Serve Someone Intentionally

Read 1 Peter 4:8–10.
Identify one person in your church or family you can serve today.
Do it quietly. Do it joyfully. Do it in love.

DAY 5 — Activate Your Spiritual Gift

Read 1 Peter 4:10.
Ask: Which gift has God given me? How can I use it in my church community?
Make a commitment to serve in your area of gifting this week.

FINAL THOUGHT

Freedom in Christ is not the right to do what you want; it is the grace to become who He wants.
And who He wants you to be is someone who reflects His love through service. Let your freedom lead you to Christlike humility this week because the greatest in the kingdom are the ones who choose the towel.
